Play Better Guitar - Expand Your Horizons
The most adaptable system is Guitar-eze.
If you've already played some guitar... been frustrated... want to play better guitar... want
to play guitar differently... want to be more versatile on guitar... want to play guitar more easily... want to play guitar
by ear... want to play guitar more by "feel"...
Here's where a guitar player can become a better guitar player.
That is - a more versatile guitar player.
Let's face it - every guitar player has changed tunings. Even if it's just drop-D,
or putting on a capo.
What if you could play guitar - really play guitar - for more than just one song or one lick
- in another tuning. You owe it to yourself to try. I've seen the jaws drop when I play. I've watched the
puzzled expressions from the audience. I've seen the raised eyebrows from fellow guitar players. Here's what Wikipedia says about open D tuning, the basis for Guitar-eze.
The comments are always the same -
"what a great sound"
"that's so full sounding"
"you do leads like that?"
"that's a whole new thing"
"wow"
It's all one simple move - to the world of open-tuned guitar. Of course, it's absolutely
perfect for beginning guitar, acoustic or electric.
But it's a whole new world for the guitar player.
Just a few of the benefits of open tuned guitar like Guitar-eze's open-D:
- riffing - like you've never riffed before
- slide guitar - the way it was meant to be played
- harmonic and overtones you never dreamed of
- a low-end crunch like nothing else
- acoustic tone like nothing else
- "ear players" especially love it
- playing by ear is enhanced dramatically
- Guitar-eze open-D opens the door to other interesting tunings
...and on and on. It's as if standard tuning was just the (more difficult)
primer or starting point. Now you can really start to play guitar.
Flipping back and forth is no problem, either. And of course, open tuning is nothing
new. Check any guitar website out there. They all make reference to open tunings. This method just puts
it altogether for a guitarist who wants a different way to play. Players like:
- Keith Richards
- Ry Cooder
- Joni Mitchell
- Elmore James
- Bo Diddley
- Muddy Waters
- Jimmy Page
- Mick Taylor
- Don Everly
- Robert Johnson
- Bonnie Raitt
- John Lee Hooker
...and countless others. So why is open tuning so under-appreciated and under-utilized?
- standard tuning (as the name implies) is the adopted standard
- standard tuning is not the easiest or most versatile tuning
- a simpler guitar method is generally not a good thing for music schools
- standard tuning is great
- open tuning is great too
- add open tuning like Guitar-eze to your guitar arsenal
That's what I suggest on this web site. Especially if progress is slow in standard
tuning. Frustrated guitar player? You owe it to yourself to give Guitar-eze a try.

Starting Guitar From Scratch with Guitar-eze
I couple of entries ago I talked about the personal satisfaction of seeing students switch from standard tuning to Guitar-eze
open-D tuning, and watching them actually play music right away on guitar.
What about complete guitar novices?
This is equally gratifying and exciting. I've had many students who started from point zero on guitar, in Guitar-eze.
For some, playing guitar had been a life-long dream, but one they felt was simply out of reach. It's great to be able
to quash the misconceptions about learning guitar having to be difficult or complicated.
With Guitar-eze open-D, I have them strumming right away.
Often, students have a song in mind they would love to play on guitar. It's never long before we can start looking
at those songs. If you've always wanted to learn a certain song you love, please let me know what it is. I'll let you know how you can learn it, easily and simply, in Guitar-eze

Playing the Blues in Guitar-eze
So many people love the blues and would love to learn to play blues guitar. One of the foundations of the blues
was a range of open guitar tunings used by the pioneers - Son House, Tampa Red, Robert Johnson, and then later disciples such
as Elmore James, Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. All of these performer used open tunings to get that blues sound.
Coming from the country-folk tradition, they probably also recognized that it was also easier to play in open tunings - no
one had money for guitar lessons back then. Also, certain tunings were adopted by players to match singing ranges, as
well as stylistic reasons for differing song types and structures.
Among the open tunings used was open-D, the basis for Guitar-eze. Clearly the early blues greats recognized the versatility of this now under -tilized and under-appreciated guitar
tuning. Whether finger picking, or strumming, or playing slide bottleneck guitar, open-D proved as adaptable a guitar
tuning for blues as you could find. Elmore James' classic "Dust My Broom", the archetypal slide guitar riff, is virtually
unthinkable in any other tuning but open-D (or capo'd or tuned higher, such as to open-E).
For someone wanting to learn to play blues guitar, or a blues player who wants to explore the alternative guitar tunings
used in blues, Guitar-eze is a great place to start.
I play Guitar-eze open-D tuning at my weekly blues jam in Windsor, Sundays, 4-8 pm. My band website.

Tuning in open-D
There are many advantages to Guitar-eze and open-D - one of the biggest is tuning your guitar. It is actually easier
to tune a guitar up in open-D.
First of all, you have not one but three D strings, all spaced by an octave. So, you have a low D, a middle D,
and a high D. My favorite starting point to tune is from the middle D. This happens to be the exact same D as
standard tuning (the thrid lowest string). Using this string as a starting point, you can tune your other D strings
quite easily - they sound alike, only one is an octave lower, the other an octave higher. Once those three strings are
in tune with each other, I go to my low A string (remember in Guitar-eze you have two A strings, low and high). The
low A string is exactly the same as standard tuning A. I tune the high A string to the low A string. That's five
out of six strings now in tune. Finally, in Guitar-eze you have an F# string. The simplest way to get this string
in tune is to slowly strum all six strings. Because you are tuned to an open major chord, you should be able to hear
whether your F# string is in tune by the way the chord sounds. When the F# string is in tune with the others, a perfect
sounding D major chord is strummed with no fingers on the frets.
My next few posts will discuss other aspects of tuning in Guitar-eze. Check back!

What a Jam on Sunday the 20th...
...of March, last night. For those of you who want to see Guitar-eze in action - it's the only way I play guitar.
My band the JumpKatz host every Sunday evening at a wonderful bar called Oasis, and last night was a humdinger - at one point we had five horn
players up at one time for a complete little big-band! Harmonica players, guitarists, keyboardists - it was a great
night. I played my Gretsch White Falcon all evening, but I may bring my faithful Tele along next week. We occasionally
take pix from the jam and post them on the band site, and we also have sound samples from our CD. Take a look. Many have asked if you can play with other people if your are in Guitar-eze open-D - the answer is: of course!
It sounds fantastic!

Guitar-eze and Rhythm Guitar
Several queries have arrived looking for an easy way to learn to play rhythm guitar.
Happy to reply that the easiest way to learn rhythm guitar has to be Guitar-eze and open-D. Say you're a singer in a
band, for example, and you want to contribute to the band instrumentally. With Guitar-eze, you start to play much more
quickly, with the simplified chord shapes (many with just one finger!). Changes are easier to see and feel, especially
for ear-players. Because chord fingerings are easier in Guitar-eze, you can concentrate your efforts on the strumming
hand, which is what gives rhythm guitar its feel. I've had many students who stumble on their
strumming hand work, because they have to spend all their time concentrating on fingerings. This is one of the
joys of the simpler, open-D Guitar-eze system. The book and CD will show you various strumming styles, to get you playing
guitar, quickly and easily. There are recorded samples for you to hear and master, fast.
